“In Their Own Words – a Volunteer Retrospective”, is a photographic project that gives a voice to the seldom heard community of volunteers giving us a glimpse into their lives and their experience in their own words. The project aims to give recognition to these unsung heroes who give the greatest gift of all – their time,  to better their community and further afield. These are their stories, of who they are and of what they have learned along the way, and what motivates them to do the work they do. This project aims to display the wide diversity of people who give their time selflessly to give something back to society but who also get something out of it for themselves. This project thus aims to challenge the misconceptions that people often have of a typical volunteer, and aims for the diversity of their stories to motivate more people to join them, as we see a little of ourselves in each and every one of them.
